Dahlias: A Guide to One of Autumn's Most Striking Blooms
Share
Every autumn, one flower quietly takes over event work, farmers market bouquets, and wedding mood boards alike. Dahlias hit their peak just as the rest of the summer garden fades, and no other bloom brings the same combination of size, geometry, and color range to a fall design.
At Metro Flower Market in Chantilly, dahlia season is one of our favorite stretches of the year, and our wholesale dahlia selection runs the full spectrum while it lasts. Here is everything florists, event designers, and flower lovers should know about autumn’s most striking bloom.
Why Dahlias Steal Every Autumn Design
Dahlias are natural focal flowers. Their petals grow in near perfect mathematical spirals, which gives even a single stem a sculptural presence that draws the eye from across a room. One or three dahlias can anchor an entire arrangement, with everything else playing a supporting role. That efficiency is part of why designers love them: fewer focal stems, bigger impact.
Forms and Sizes, from Ball to Dinner Plate
The dahlia family is enormous. Tight, perfectly round ball dahlias hold their shape beautifully and tend to last longest in the vase. Decorative types bring the classic layered, slightly informal face most people picture. And at the dramatic end, dinner plate varieties open wider than your hand, the kind of bloom guests photograph at receptions. Most wholesale stems, including ours, arrive in five stem bunches, so you can mix forms without committing to more than you need.
A Color for Every Palette
Dahlias cover nearly the entire fall palette on their own.
Reds and burgundies bring the depth an autumn centerpiece needs, while yellows and oranges glow like the season itself. On the softer side, blush and light pink varieties have become the backbone of modern fall weddings, pairing beautifully with cream, toffee, and terracotta tones.
Purples and deep pinks round out the range for jewel toned designs. Whatever the palette, there is a dahlia for it, and usually three.
Care: Getting the Most from a Delicate Star
Honesty first: dahlias are not the longest lived cut flower. Expect three to five beautiful days, a little more with excellent care. Process them the moment they arrive with a sharp angle cut and a clean vase of cool water, and let them hydrate somewhere cool before design work. Keep them out of direct sun and heat, change the water daily, and handle the heads gently, because bruised petals show. For events, buy as close to the date as freshness allows and hold stems cool and dark.
Designing with Dahlias
Because dahlias command attention, build around them rather than beside them. Let one form the focal point, then add texture and motion with smaller companions. Fall favorites from our market include asters for starry filler, amaranthus for trailing drama, and seasonal foliage for structure. A dahlia centerpiece needs surprisingly few stems to look abundant.
Ordering Dahlias Wholesale
Dahlia season is glorious and short, so plan around it. Our in stock selection turns over daily at the market, and for weddings and events, our prebook program reserves the colors you need, timed to arrive at peak freshness. When the first frost ends the season, it ends fast, so if a fall event calls for dahlias, prebook early.
